Coalition opposes ANY proposal to decriminalise abortion
“Candy Broad’s proposed bill to decriminalise abortion would remove all restrictions on abortion. It would lead to abortion on demand for any reason at any time during a woman’s pregnancy and that would be a deplorable step for Victoria,” said Kirsten Jack, spokesperson for CADOA, the Coalition Against Decriminalisation Of Abortion.
When CADOA surveyed all candidates prior to the Victorian election, the Labor Party tried to distance themselves from the Labor Party policy of removing abortion from the Crimes Act. They would not tell the people of Victoria about their real plans.
Less than six months later a private member’s bill is in the parliament.
Some Labor MPs have said they do not support the Broad Bill, and have proposed an alternative that would remove abortion from the Crimes Act and put it in the Health Act. Their suggestion is to put the Menhennitt defence into law – allowing for abortions where the life or physical or mental health of the mother is at risk.
Kirsten Jack said “Both proposals would have the effect of legalising abortion in Victoria and allow babies to be killed up to birth. CADOA strongly opposes all moves to decriminalise abortion in Victoria.”
“The Coalition Against the Decriminalisation of Abortion urges all MPs in the Legislative Council and the Legislative Assembly to vote against all bills that seek to decriminalise abortion,” said Kirsten Jack.
“There are already too many abortions in Australia. The law needs to be strengthened to protect the lives of unborn babies, not weakened,” said Kirsten Jack.
Prior to the election CADOA surveyed all candidates as to whether they supported the decriminalisation of abortion. Those results are posted on CADOA’s website – www.cadoa.org
The CADOA website, at www.cadoa.org , contains information and articles as well as a list of supporting organisations, which include the Catholic Archdiocese of Melbourne, Lutheran Church of Australia, Australian Christian Lobby, Catch The Fire Ministries, Salt Shakers and more.
